What does a school council do?

A school council is a formal group of pupils who act as representatives of their classmates in discussing school issues with the staff and leadership of the school. They will help to inform decisions about how the school is run and take on projects that support the children’s learning and development, such as organising charity events, representing the school at outside events, or ensuring the school is environmentally friendly. A school council can provide a meaningful way in which pupils can voice their opinions, and have their views considered in decisions that impact upon them.

There are several events already in the school calendar that the school council will help to organise and promote to the school and wider community (when appropriate) such as the MacMillan Cake sale, The Salvation Army Gift Appeal, Christian Aid Week and also participating in World Environment Day.

What does your child have to do in this role?

There will be regular meetings that your child should attend so that they can discuss and complete any activities required with the School Council leader. The representatives will then feedback to their classes about what has been discussed in the meeting.

The meetings will take place at the Junior School in Hawthorn Classroom at 8am on the following dates:

Friday 26th September 2025

Friday 17th October 2025

Friday 14th November 2025

Friday 12th December 2025

Friday 9th January 2025

Friday 6th February 2025

Friday 6th March 2025

Friday 24th April 2025

Friday 22nd May 2025

Friday 19th June 2025

Friday 17th July 2025

A member of staff will walk the children from the infant classes back to the Infant school at the end of the meeting in time for the beginning of the school day.

She is looking forward to working with the school council this year and continuing to develop the pupil voice of our schools.

The projects we are looking at this term:

  • Macmillan Coffee Morning
  • Salvation Army Gifts

The School Council held their first meeting on Friday 26th September, and it was lovely for Mrs Prebble to get to know them.  They worked as a team to create a short video to introduce themselves and say a big thank you to the school community for supporting their first charity event.
