Week 9 Other activities

Continue to hear your child read everyday and also read stories to them. Talk about books, make predictions, create alternative endings or discuss your favourite bits. Enjoy both fiction and non-fiction books and talk about the differences.Remember the Oxford Owl website has lots of ebooks for the children to read. You just have to log in to access these.

If you need some guidance on which book level is most suitable for your child, please take a look at the table explaining book levels on the link below.

You can access daily phonics lessons, like the ones we do in school, on the Ruth Miskin channel on YouTube. Year 1 will mostly be focusing on Set 2 and Set 3 sounds. Please see the documents below for more information on lesson levels as well as a list of the sounds in each set.  You can also access Storytime and Poem time on this channel too. If you can think of your own practical and fun ways of teaching phonics, that's great too!

Other Phonic links:

Use the 'look, say, cover, write, check' method to help your child practise spelling their Year 1 common exception words (see list on the class page). Choose 5-10 words a day. As an additional challenge, can your child use the words in a written sentence using cursive handwriting?

If your child can spell all of the Year 1 common exception words or fancies a change, then they could try to spell the days of the week.

In school this week, we are going to be focusing on learning doubles of numbers to 10 and also how to solve problems by grouping or sharing objects .  BBC Bitesize and White Rose maths lessons will focus on these maths topics too.
