Week 1 Other Activities
Daily tasks - Yr 1
'Reading gives us some place to go when we have to stay where we are.'
'The thing about books. They let you travel without moving your feet.'
Some great quotes that truly reflects the unique situation that we find ourselves in. Please hear your child read everyday. Talk about books, make predictions, create alternative endings or discuss your favourite bits. Enjoy both fiction and non fiction books and talk about the differences.
Remember the Oxford Owl website has lots of ebooks for the children to read. You just have to log in to access these.
Repetition of phonics is key to your child's consolidation of this important reading skill. You could visit the Ruth Miskin channel on YouTube for daily phonics videos. Lessons are uploaded at different times depending on the set of letters being focused on. Year 1 will mostly be focusing on Set 2 and Set 3 sounds.
Use the 'look, say, cover, write, check' method to help your child to practise their year 1 common exception words. Choose 5-10 words a day. As an additional challenge, can your child use the words in a written sentence?
Practise your child's number bonds to 10 and 20. Say them, sing them, chant them! Now is a great time/opportunity to learn these by rote. The Top Marks site has a good game for learning quick fire number bonds.
Continue to use the 100 square provided in your pack to count forwards and back from any given number in ones. Also practise counting in 2's, 5's and 10's. The BBC Bitesize website has some great maths videos and activities in it's 'Daily Lessons' section this week which focus on counting in 1s, 2s and 5s. (There are also some good English lessons on there too).
The Stickman activities and the above suggestions should give you plenty of opportunities for home learning, if however you would like any further challenges in Maths, you could look at the resources on the White Rose webiste.
